Applied Theatre, Adolescent English Learners, and the Performance of Literacy

This article shows how applied theatre can engage adolescent English learners, particularly reluctant readers, in meaningful literacy experiences. It presents four approaches—context building, narrative action, poetic action, and reflective action—that help students interpret texts collaboratively, explore perspectives, and communicate through verbal and nonverbal performance.
