Reading at the Edge of Your Seat: Anticipation and the Classic American Short Story
This article shows how teachers can use Directed Reading and Thinking Activity (DRTA) to help students predict, question, and stay engaged while reading classic American short stories. Using O. Henry’s “After Twenty Years” as an anchor text, the authors demonstrate how anticipation boosts motivation and comprehension for secondary and postsecondary learners.
