On the Cover: Cliff Houses on the Rio Mancos, Colorado is an oil painting by American artist William Henry Holmes, who lived from 1846 to 1933 and was also an accomplished scientist. The painting, created in the 1870s, depicts cliff dwellings that were built in southwestern Colorado, probably between 800 and 1,000 years ago. The dwellings, located in alcoves under natural overhangs, provided shelter and security for communities of people who lived there until approximately the year 1300. This painting is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection, which features many more works by Holmes and by thousands of other artists.
