On the Cover: Cape Cod, Beach is an oil-on-canvas painting by Herman Hartwich (1853–1926), who painted in the United States and Germany. Many of his works depict countryside scenes. This painting, from the 1890s, shows a stretch of Cape Cod, a peninsula in Massachusetts that was a popular tourist destination in Hartwich’s lifetime and continues to attract travelers now. The painting is part of the Smithsonian American Art Museum collection, which features more works by Hartwich and by thousands of other artists.
